After my husband’s brain tumor in 2006, I found that encaustic painting allowed me to combine images and ideas in ways that resonated more authentically emotionally and aesthetically than the traditional painting and drawing materials I had been using.
In these paintings I build and fuse layers of pigment and wax, and then dig and scrape back into the surfaces to reveal selected images while concealing others. The marks and scars in the painting reinforce the emotional tenor of the pieces and serve as a record of the process. Although previous images are buried, they remain integral to the meaning of the finished work.
